Scott Crews

Inventor of The Quick Wick® and creator of the first Polypro Firehoop, Scott is a keystone in the bridge between firehoopers and their instruments of choice.  Stepping into the world of hooping through his wife Julia and creating hoopdrum, modern day's original hoop & drum duo, Scott has been building upon Julia's original firehoop design (circa 2003) ever since they fell in love in 2005.  Also taking cues from fellow crafters Rainbow Michael (cosmicfiredance.com) & Shakti Sunfire, Scott's innovations have set many of the standards you see in the firehoops of today.  His enthusiasm and dedication remain the driving forces behind Synergy's position as the #1 best-selling & most trusted firehoops in the world.

Before hoopdrum and Cosmic Fire became Synergy Firehoops, Scott had hired his most capAble, trustAble and reliAble friend, Able Jones, to help with firehoop production.  Not only a long-time friend & musical partner, but also the one who introduced Scott & Julia, Able eventually took over every job and quickly became the shop master, now lovingly crafting each and every Synergy product.  Scott continues to innovate and improve products as well as work with customers & firehoopers directly, striving to fulfill your every wish & desire!

In addition to performing and engineering firehoop products, Scott spent about 8 years teaching drum lessons after graduating from Elon University in 2003.  While he earned a bachelor’s in Psychology, Scott spent most of his college years learning about the ways of music and the natural world.  From 2002 - 2007, he was an Earth Guide at The Center for Education, Imagination and the Natural World where he worked with the youth, reconnecting them to the natural world.  With a strong environmental agenda and a mind for sustainability, Scott is also passionate about plants, wild foods, composting, worm-farming and of course, reducing/reusing/recycling in efforts to minimize our ecological footprint.  One of Scott’s biggest roles at Synergy is finding ways to be as green as possible, whether sourcing materials, creating low energy, low-waste crafting & packaging processes, or recycling 100% of all firehoop materials, you can be sure that Scott is considering the natural environment in every deliberation.

If Scott’s collection of irons in the fire don’t keep him busy enough, he also helps Julia run Hoop Convergence, the original hoop dancers’ gathering, as well as The Flowjo, hoopdrum’s music and movement studio.  He also does graphics & web design for hoopdrum, The Flowjo, Hoop Convergence and Synergy Firehoops.  Scott, Julia and their sweet Rainbow Boa Constrictor Prism reside in downtown Carrboro, NC in the hoopdrum/Synergy headquarters.
